As the evenings draw in and the temperature drops, most of us start thinking about the usual winter checklist: bleed the radiators, book a boiler service, check the smoke alarms. All useful, but they only get you back to where you started. A better question this year is: what could you actually improve, so your home runs warmer, safer and cheaper all winter long, not just gets by?
From smart heating controls to electrical safety checks, a few well-chosen upgrades now can save you money, hassle and cold mornings later. Here's where we'd suggest starting.
Smart heating controls
Smart controls such as Hive can help you heat your home around your daily routine, allowing you to schedule heating, manage temperatures and adjust remotely.
Heating zones: keep living areas warm in the evening while bedrooms stay cooler.
Hot water schedules: stop heating a full tank around the clock.
Remote control: adjust everything from your phone if plans change.
Smart TRVs and zoned underfloor controls
Smart thermostatic radiator valves fit onto your existing radiator valves, giving each room its own temperature and schedule, plus built-in frost protection for rooms you rarely use. If you have water or electric underfloor heating, smart zoning can use weather forecasts and room occupancy to warm a space only when it's needed, such as a heated bathroom floor on a winter morning without heating the whole house to match.
More smart options worth considering
Smart lighting: scheduled to come on before you arrive home, make the house look lived-in while you're away or adjust brightness depending on natural light. Motion sensors are great for high-traffic areas or if you’re someone who often forgets to hit the switch as you leave a room.
Smart plugs: avoid ‘vampire’ or standby power by managing energy-hungry appliances like TVs, portable heaters and festive lights – control devices by schedule or phone, though always check the plug's rating for anything that heats.
Smart home hub: manage heating, lighting, plugs and more from one app, making it easier to keep on top of energy use.
Is your home properly insulated?
Even the smartest heating can only do so much if heat is escaping. Worth checking:
Loft insulation: a large share of heat can be lost through a thin or patchy roof.
Draughts: gaps around doors, windows and floorboards let warm air out.
Cylinder and pipework: a good jacket and lagging on exposed pipes reduces heat loss and protects against freezing.
Is your boiler up to the job?
An annual boiler service keeps it safe and efficient and it's better to catch a worn part in autumn than mid cold-snap. Watch for strange noises, a pilot light that keeps going out, regular pressure drops or rising bills. If your boiler is 10 to 15 years old or more, a replacement may be worth considering and we'll always give you an honest view on repair versus replacement.
Lower your boiler flow temperature
One simple adjustment that may improve the efficiency of a modern condensing boiler is reviewing the central-heating flow temperature. In suitable systems, reducing the flow temperature can help the boiler operate more efficiently while still keeping the home comfortable. The correct setting will depend on the heating system and property, so if you're unsure, we can check this during a service.
Radiators and heating performance
Cold at the top: usually trapped air, which bleeding can fix.
Cold at the bottom: often sludge restricting circulation.
Uneven heat around the house: the system may need balancing.
Radiator adjustments, a system clean and a magnetic filter can help your home warm up faster and protect your boiler.
Small plumbing problems with big costs
Dripping hot taps: waste water and the energy used to heat it.
Slow hot water: can point to a faulty valve or scale build-up.
Damp patches or a moving water meter: may signal a hidden leak.
These are simple jobs now but expensive ones after a burst pipe. Our experienced plumbing team can help with leak detection, taps and general repairs.
Getting your electrics ready for winter
More lighting, tumble dryers, electric heaters and heated blankets put extra demand on your wiring. It’s worth calling an electrician if breakers trip regularly, sockets feel warm, lights flicker when appliances start, or you're relying on chained extension leads.
Additional sockets are often a safer solution – we can also fit USB and outdoor sockets.
Electrical safety comes first
Damaged sockets and switches: replace cracked, scorched or loose fittings.
Ageing fuse boxes: may lack modern protection.
RCD protection: cuts power in a fraction of a second if there's a fault.
An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is a formal inspection of a property's fixed electrical installation. Electrical safety inspections are particularly important for landlords, and an EICR may also be worthwhile if you've recently moved into a property, haven't had the wiring checked for several years, or are planning significant electrical work. If the inspection identifies any issues, we can advise on the appropriate remedial works.
Lighting for darker evenings
Security lighting: deters unwelcome visitors.
PIR motion-sensor lights: only come on when needed.
Pathway lighting: helps prevent slips on wet evenings.
Weatherproof electrics: must be properly rated for cold, wet conditions, so leave this to a qualified professional.
Charging an electric vehicle in winter
Cold weather can affect EV battery efficiency and charging performance. Having a dedicated home EV charger provides a convenient way to charge at home, and we can check that the property's electrical supply and installation are suitable for the additional load.
Our team can advise on the appropriate location for an EV charger on your property, such as a driveway or garage, and carry out the full installation.
Start where it matters most
You don't need to do everything at once. Begin with whatever causes the most bother or the highest bills, whether that's a temperamental boiler, cold radiators or a dark driveway.
If you're unsure where to start, we're happy to help. We offer a free, no-obligation consultation and quote, and we'll always be honest about what's worth doing. Call us on 01305 318558 or get in touch to book a heating, plumbing or electrical check-up before winter arrives.
